Stock Market Today (Sept. 28, 2026): Nasdaq, S&P 500 fall after Trump rebuffs Iran peace deal, oil prices rise

The S&P 500 fell 0.77% (59.72 points) to 7,683.69, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.92% (248.34 points) to 26,820.38 and the Dow fell 0.67% (347.11 points) to 51,481.51. Stocks declined amid renewed U.S.-Iran tensions after President Trump told Axios in a phone interview Sunday that he expects negotiators to engage in more talks with Iran this week, following his rejection of an Iranian peace proposal; an analyst noted geopolitical risk would define the start of the trading week after a stall in diplomatic progress. Bloom Energy Sinks 8% as Sharp Run Unwinds; Plug Power Drops 6%, FuelCell Eases

Bloom Energy fell nearly 9% Monday with no company announcement explaining the decline; the article attributes it to momentum unwinding after the stock surged 22% over the past month, calling the move a reflection of "positioning more than a shift in the company's business," with pressure concentrated in a small corner of industrials tied to onsite power demand even as the broader market fell only 0.62%. 24/7 Wall St.

The forward look
TR:C thesis
Yields led the tape into the new week. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 7bp to 5.24% and the 2-year jumped 11bp to 4.92%, extending a march toward multiyear highs alongside strong economic data and worsening fiscal conditions; per CME FedWatch, futures price roughly a 70% probability of a 25bp Fed hike at the October meeting, though exact odds vary by source. Equities sold off in response, the S&P 500 falling 0.77% to 7,683.69, the Nasdaq 0.92% to 26,820.38 and the Dow 0.67% to 51,481.51, with Communication Services (-1.58%) and Consumer Discretionary (-1.41%) lagging while Health Care (+0.33%) and Consumer Staples (+0.27%) held up best; the VIX jumped 8.07% to 16.07. President Trump's rejection of Iran's latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz added a geopolitical layer, though the reaction in oil was muted once the ICE Brent contract's roll from November to December delivery is accounted for: December Brent settled at $97.82, up 0.39% versus its own Friday close, while WTI added roughly 0.7% intraday. Gold fell sharply, down 3.52% to $4,168.42 per the session's COMEX settlement, pressured by the stronger dollar (DXY +0.21% to 101.22) and higher real yields outweighing safe-haven demand. Among individual names, Bloom Energy led S&P 500 decliners, down 8.95% as a month-long momentum run unwound with no company-specific catalyst; DoorDash (-7.74%) and Qualcomm (-7.17%) also lagged, while Palo Alto Networks (+4.63%) led gainers. The week ahead is data-heavy: Dallas Fed manufacturing today, JOLTS and Conference Board confidence on September 29, ADP employment, the GDP third estimate and August PCE on September 30, ISM manufacturing and weekly jobless claims on October 1, September nonfarm payrolls on October 2, and the ISM services PMI on October 5.
