Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq wobble as 30-year Treasury yield climbs to 24-year high

The Dow fell 0.2%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.1% and the Nasdaq was roughly flat as the 30-year Treasury yield surged to 5.62%, its highest level since 2002, pushing mortgage rates to a three-year high of 7.58%. Sentiment was also weighed down by a Reuters report of leaked details from Anthropic's IPO prospectus showing a $2 trillion valuation target alongside steep losses and capital commitments, OpenAI shelving a frontier model over internal safety-test concerns, consumer confidence falling to its lowest level since 2014, and job openings coming in below expectations; oil eased slightly as Saudi Arabia resumed exports. FICO Stock Plummets Over 26% Amid New Mortgage Pricing Regulations

Fair Isaac shares fell more than 26% after FHFA Director Bill Pulte announced that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will adopt a unified mortgage-pricing model incorporating VantageScore data rather than relying exclusively on FICO's credit score, ending the dual-pricing structure that had discouraged lenders from using the rival score. VantageScore is developed jointly by Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. GuruFocus noted company insiders had sold roughly $1.35 million of FICO shares over the prior three months. GuruFocus

Stock Market Today, Sept. 29: Carnival Surges 13% on Record Bookings, Raised Guidance

Carnival closed at $25.11 after reporting adjusted EPS of $1.43 and record revenue of $8.44 billion, both ahead of Wall Street estimates, and raising full-year adjusted EPS guidance. CEO Josh Weinstein said the company “delivered another quarter of top and bottom-line records, with accelerating demand and even stronger cost discipline”; 2027 bookings are already half-filled at record pricing and total debt has fallen below $24 billion from a 2023 peak of $36 billion. Royal Caribbean (+7.5%) and Norwegian Cruise Line (+3.4%) also rallied on the results. The Motley Fool

TR:C thesis
Treasury yields extended a six-day selloff into the new week, with the 30-year touching 5.62% intraday, its highest since 2002, before easing to a 5.59% close (+3bp), while the 10-year rose 2bp to 5.26% and the front end eased slightly (2-year -3bp to 4.89%) as fiscal-supply and inflation concerns kept pressure concentrated at the long end. Equities finished lower but well off session lows: the S&P 500 fell 0.17% to 7,670.84, the Nasdaq 0.09% to 26,797.54 and the Dow 0.26% to 51,349.92, with the VIX little changed at 16.04. Utilities (+1.17%) and Communication Services (+0.26%) led sector performance while Energy (-0.90%) and Materials (-0.75%) lagged as Brent crude settled down 2.6% to $102.59 on signs Middle East export flows are recovering. Sentiment was also pressured by AI-sector jitters (leaked details from Anthropic's IPO prospectus and OpenAI shelving a frontier model over safety concerns) and a sharp deterioration in consumer sentiment, with the Conference Board's index falling 6.7 points to 81.9, its lowest since 2014, even as JOLTS job openings held roughly steady at 7.1 million. Gold rose 0.29% to $4,180.70 despite a firmer dollar (DXY +0.18% to 101.40). Among individual names, Fair Isaac led S&P 500 decliners, down 26.52% after regulators cleared the way for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to adopt VantageScore alongside FICO's credit score, while Carnival led gainers, up 13.41% on record bookings and raised guidance, with Royal Caribbean (+7.45%) and Applied Materials (+5.19%) also among the day's leaders. The week ahead brings the GDP third estimate and August PCE tomorrow, ISM manufacturing PMI and weekly jobless claims on October 1, September nonfarm payrolls on October 2, and the ISM services PMI on October 5.
