TR:C thesis
September nonfarm payrolls rose by 29,000 and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, a weaker labor print than expected, and equities rallied on it: the S&P 500 rose 0.73% to 7,722.72, the Nasdaq 1.19% to 27,190.86 and the Dow 0.49% to 51,176.96, while the VIX fell 1.08 to 15.31. Consumer Discretionary (+1.13%), Technology (+1.01%) and Industrials (+0.78%) led sector performance, with Health Care (-0.01%) the only decliner. Treasury yields nonetheless finished higher across most of the curve: the 2-year rose 5bp to 4.83%, the 5-year 5bp to 5.06%, the 10-year 4bp to 5.28% and the 30-year 2bp to 5.63%, even as, per Yahoo Finance, bond traders cut the odds of an October Fed hike to 16% from 64% a week earlier. Brent's December contract settled at $102.25 (-0.06%) as the G7 moved to release up to 100 million barrels of crude and diesel stocks, gold fell 0.96% to $4,162.50 and the dollar eased (DXY -0.17% to 101.88). Among individual names, Teradyne (+8.00%), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (+7.36%) and ECHO (+6.80%) led S&P 500 gainers, while Western Digital (-10.22%), Seagate (-10.21%) and Accenture (-6.31%) led decliners; Accenture's decline followed a 15.78% gain on October 1. The week ahead opens with the ISM services PMI on October 5, followed by the August trade balance and a $58bn 3-year note auction on October 6. The minutes of the September 15-16 FOMC meeting follow on October 7 alongside a $39bn 10-year reopening, and weekly jobless claims and a $22bn 30-year reopening on October 8.
