The S&P 500 rose 0.58% to a record 7,818.93, its first close above 7,800, the Nasdaq Composite 0.45% to 27,599.79 and the Dow 0.49% to 51,521.28, while the VIX fell 0.51 to 15.01. Utilities (+2.98%), Consumer Discretionary (+1.18%) and Real Estate (+1.06%) led sector performance, with Health Care (-0.17%) the only decliner; the Utilities move followed the Constellation Energy and Google nuclear agreement, with Constellation (+12.25%) and Vistra (+10.77%) among the strongest S&P 500 names. Treasury yields eased: the 2-year fell 5bp to 4.79%, the 5-year 3bp to 5.03%, the 10-year 4bp to 5.27% and the 30-year 2bp to 5.64%. Treasury’s 3-year note auction priced $58bn at a 4.932% high yield with a 2.62 bid-to-cover ratio, and the August trade deficit widened to $105.6bn from a revised $92.8bn in July, per BEA. Brent’s December contract settled at $100.58 (+0.26%), gold rose 0.74% to $4,188.30 (1:30 PM ET print) and the dollar eased (DXY -0.28% to 101.85). Among individual names, Ciena (+13.85%), Corteva (+12.27%, on the JPMorgan upgrade) and Constellation Energy (+12.25%) led S&P 500 gainers, while Seagate (-9.18%), Moderna (-7.75%) and Western Digital (-6.93%) led decliners. The minutes of the September 15-16 FOMC meeting arrive October 7 alongside a $39bn 10-year reopening, followed by jobless claims, wholesale trade and a $22bn 30-year reopening on October 8, and the preliminary University of Michigan sentiment survey on October 9. October 12 is the Columbus Day federal holiday, and September CPI follows on October 14.
