The S&P 500 fell 0.22% to 7,801.77, the Nasdaq Composite 0.22% to 27,538.69 and the Dow 0.66% to 51,179.87, retreating from the prior session’s record closes, while the VIX rose 0.07 to 15.08. Health Care (+1.03%) was the only sector to advance on the day; Industrials (-2.18%), Materials (-1.51%) and Real Estate (-1.29%) lagged, with Caterpillar (-5.75%) the leading S&P 500 decliner, followed by EME (-4.83%) and CrowdStrike (-4.81%). Treasury yields were mixed: the 2-year fell 2bp to 4.77% while the 10-year rose 1bp to 5.28% and the 30-year 3bp to 5.67%, after the 10-year reached 5.36% and the 30-year 5.73% intraday, the highest for each since 2002 per NBC News. The Treasury’s $39bn 10-year reopening stopped at 5.300%, 1.7bp through the when-issued yield, with a 2.77 bid-to-cover ratio. Minutes of the September 15-16 FOMC meeting showed most participants judged another rate increase would likely be appropriate by year end, with no indication of timing. Brent’s December contract settled at $100.20 (-0.38%), gold fell 1.15% to $4,140.20 (1:30 PM ET print) and the dollar firmed (DXY +0.42% to 102.28). Among gainers, NRG Energy (+4.84%), Moderna (+4.81%) and Micron (+4.06%) led. Governor Waller speaks at 4:30 AM ET on October 8, followed by jobless claims, final August wholesale trade, a $22bn 30-year reopening at 1:01 PM and Musalem at 1:40 PM, with the preliminary University of Michigan sentiment survey on October 9. October 12 is the Columbus Day federal holiday, and September CPI follows on October 14.
