The S&P 500 fell 0.47% to 7,765.36 and the Nasdaq Composite 1.25% to 27,193.34, while the Dow rose 0.10% to 51,231.64 and the VIX gained 0.33 to 15.41. Energy (+2.97%) and Consumer Staples (+2.11%) led sector performance; Technology (-1.79%) was the only sector to fall more than 0.4%, as semiconductor names sold off after a Financial Times report that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was $20 billion lower than previously estimated, per Yahoo Finance. Coherent (-9.63%), Corning (-6.38%) and Vistra (-6.35%) were the leading S&P 500 decliners, while CoStar (+8.01%), Chipotle (+6.21%) and GoDaddy (+6.15%) led gainers. Treasury yields fell from the 2-year out: the 2-year eased 2bp to 4.75%, the 10-year 6bp to 5.22% and the 30-year 7bp to 5.60%. The Treasury’s $22bn 30-year reopening stopped at 5.618% with a 2.54 bid-to-cover ratio. Brent’s December contract settled at $104.28 (+4.07%) as Iran stepped up tanker attacks and Hurricane Isaias threatened U.S. Gulf production, paring gains after President Trump said the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterm elections, per Reuters. Gold rose 0.37% to $4,155.50 (1:30 PM ET print) and the dollar softened (DXY -0.17% to 102.10). The preliminary University of Michigan sentiment survey follows on October 9 at 10:00 AM ET. October 12 is the Columbus Day federal holiday, and September CPI is due October 14 at 8:30 AM ET, ahead of the 2:00 PM ET Beige Book.
