TR:C thesis

The major averages diverged on a holiday-thinned Monday, with the Dow up 0.38% to 51,850.55 while the S&P 500 slipped 0.06% to 7,807.24 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.44%. The VIX rose 0.37 to 15.21. Positioning rotated out of technology: Technology (-1.22%) and Consumer Discretionary (-0.51%) were the only meaningful sector decliners, while Energy (+1.43%), Consumer Staples (+1.17%) and Communication Services (+0.97%) led. Optical networking accounted for the three largest S&P 500 decliners (Ciena -9.95%, Lumentum -9.78%, Coherent -7.87%), a move Seeking Alpha characterized as profit-taking after a recent rally, and Yahoo Finance reported Micron lower on Chinese memory competition concerns. Fair Isaac (+10.85%) led the index higher after a period of heavy selling.

Energy was the firmest part of the tape. Brent settled up 1.84% at $106.65 and WTI up 2.06% at $93.74, per Bloomberg on doubts over a proposed energy ceasefire and fresh attacks on Saudi Arabia, and the sector ETF finished as the top performer. The dollar firmed (DXY 102.60, +0.37) and gold eased 0.61% to $4,190.30 (1:30 PM ET print). The cash Treasury market was closed for Columbus Day, so the curve carries Friday’s prints into Tuesday: the 2-year at 4.80% and the 10-year at 5.24%.

The week now turns to earnings and inflation. Major bank results open the reporting season on Tuesday, per Yahoo Finance, and September CPI arrives Wednesday at 8:30 AM ET, followed by the 2:00 PM ET Beige Book. With Brent above $106 and the 10-year at 5.24% heading into the print, the inflation data set the tone for rates. Retail sales, the Producer Price Index and the Empire State and Philadelphia Fed surveys follow on Thursday, with Chairman Warsh in conversation with IMF Managing Director Georgieva that evening, and industrial production closes the week Friday at 9:15 AM ET.
